JAPANESE GIFT: Japanese Consul General Tadahiro Abe presented an $8,000 grant for the East Asia Library at a ceremony at his official residence earlier this month. The grant will enhance the UW’s Japanese collection and provide new equipment, including a server and computer, CD-ROM device and scanner. Among those attending were Betsy Wilson, UW Libraries director; Keiko Yokota-Carter, Japanese studies librarian; Marie Anchordoguy, who chairs the Japan Studies department at the Jackson School; Ted Mack, assistant professor of modern Japanese literature; Paul Atkins, assistant professor of classic Japanese literature; and Diane Adachi, director of the UW Center for International Affairs. The Japan World Exposition Commemorative Fund, commemorating the 1970 World Exposition in Osaka, promotes Japanese culture and studies around the world.

HAMSTER HOCKEY: Four staffers at the Applied Physics Lab donned hockey gear this summer to give their all for the Fighting Ice Hamsters. Jim Luby, Peter Brodsky, Fran Olson and Laurence Tomsic managed a 6–3 season with the team, which boasted its own logo designed by Shari Ireton. Ireton is a communication specialist at UW Engineered Biomaterials, but she donated her skills to the Hamsters because she’s also Tomsic’s wife.

KUDOS: Peter Hobbs, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, is featured in the October issue of the Smithsonian magazine. The two-page article describes Hobbs’ career and his worldwide studies of clouds, precipitation, atmospheric particles and climate change . . . Burke curator of Native American art Robin K. Wright was among the winners of Washington State Book Awards. Wright was honored for Northern Haida Master Carvers, published by UW Press. . . Carolyn Apel, an office assistant in plastic surgery at Harborview, has a new book out, Dr. Jones and Carolyn, that can do duty either as a children’s book or an ESL text. Originally written in Chinese and published in Taiwan, the book is a new translation . . . Matthew Krashan, director of the UW World Series at Meany Hall, was given the Jerry Willis Award by the Western Arts Alliance for his dedication to the series . . . Shahram Vaezy, associate director for education, Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound at the APL, has been awarded the Acoustical Society of America’s Science Writing by a Professional prize. The prize is for Vaezy’s article, “Acoustic Surgery” . . . Donald Wulff, director of the Center for Instructional Development and Research, was honored with the Bob Pierleoni Spirit of POD Award, given by the Professional Organization and Development (POD) Network in Higher Education. The award was given “in recognition of his many contributions to the field of faculty development, his long and valued service to the organization, and the spirit of excellence, collaboration, and good will that characterizes his work.”
