“Conquering Low Back Pain: A Rehabilitation Approach” is the topic for a presentation by Dr. Mark Harrast, assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine and of orthopaedics and sports medicine, and Joy Beatty of the UW Sports Medicine Clinic. They will speak from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 13, at the downtown Seattle REI store. The talk is free and sponsored by UW Meddical Center. Call 598-4972 for more information.


Dr. Michael Vitiello, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, is the lead UW researcher for a grant from the Sleep Medicine Education and Research Foundation(SMERF). The organization granted researchers $75,000 to develop descriptions of the qualitative and quantitative aspects of normative sleep across the human life span. Vitiello, whose work focuses on sleep and sleep disorders in the context of aging, will conduct a comprehensive literature review in collaboration with researchers at Stanford and Brown universities. They will be looking at measures of normative sleep, as well as the epidemiology of sleep disorders and sleep-related breathing disorders in children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. The researchers will present their findings at the 2003 annual meeting of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and publish a series of integrated review papers in a special issue of the journal SLEEP. SMERF is an educational foundation and a research-funding arm of the AASM.


Dr. Michael Waliszewski, who earned a bachelor’s degree and a degree in dentistry from Marquette University in Wisconsin, is the first recipient of the David H. Wands Graduate Fellowship in Prosthodontics. Wands established the fellowship to encourage graduate students to pursue a career in dental education. While in dental school, Waliszewski received the American College of Prosthodontics 2002 Award for Excellence in Prosthodontics.


Terry Ann Jankowski, a staff member at the Health Sciences Libraries and Information Center, has accepted a two-year appointment on the editorial advisory board for the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, an evidence-based resource for clinical and patient information on herbals and dietary supplements used in the United States. She also recently co-authored a poster presentation on library resources related to natural medicines, which was presented at the Medical Library Association’s 2002 annual meeting.
