Expert seeks ways to foster development without depleting resources

News and Information

“Science and Technology for Sustainability,” a free, public lecture by Harvard University’s William Clark, will focus on linking research to policy by, for instance, moving from arguments over statistics and reports generated by hundreds of different businesses, non-profits and government agencies to debates based on mutually agreed-on environmental data.

The lecture Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Washington Husky Union Building’s West Ballroom, is an “Ocean to Stars Lecture” sponsored by the UW’s College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences.

More information is available at http://www.cofs.washington.edu/oceanlecture/index.html or by calling (206) 616-6692.

Clark trained as an ecologist and is leading efforts to try to determine the best frameworks and means to assess environmental change and determine if progress is being made toward sustainable development. Given the global nature of environmental problems such as ozone depletion, climate change and air pollution that circles the globe, it is particularly important to develop common scientific assessments that are relevant even among countries with quite different cultures and governments.
