‘Cover the Uninsured’ effort plans two programs here

“Cover the Uninsured Week” is a series of national and local activities from Monday, March 10, to Sunday, March 16. The events are scheduled to raise awareness of the issues facing more than 41 million uninsured Americans.

Former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter are honorary co-chairs of the project, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the California Endowment, the American Medical Association, American Nurses Association, Healthcare Leadership Council, and other national organizations.

A Town Hall Meeting is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, March 10, at Harborview Medical Center Auditorium. A panel will discuss the problems of the uninsured, and possible solutions. Audience members also will have a chance to ask questions.

A UW campus event will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, in Hogness Auditorium at the Health Sciences Center. Participants will discuss the present and future U.S. health-care system. Panelists include Dr. Mark Gardner of the Health Policy Analysis Program; Dr. Ed Wagner, a co-author of the Institute of Medicine report on the uninsured; Dr. Doug Conrad of the UW’s Center for Health Management Research; Dr. Robert Crittenden, associate professor of family medicine; Dr. John Neff, professor of pediatrics; and Kathleen O’Connor, health policy consultant. The moderator will be Steve Scher of KUOW radio.

Both events are free and open to everyone.
