GOING THE DISTANCE: A UW professor and a doctoral student, both from the College of Engineering, have been named recipients of the third annual R1edu Awards recognizing pioneering work in the field of distance learning.

Joe Mahoney, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, won the award for his work in the distance learning program in Construction Engineering. The program, the first of its kind in the nation, allows engineers to pursue one of three certificates, or combine them towards a master’s degree. Mahoney co-developed — along with fellow awardee Stephen Muench — the Pavement Construction online course for the program, which he also teaches. He and Muench are working to develop other courses for the program.

Muench has been active in developing CD-ROM interactive guides for online courses. Two of his works have been used as the primary texts and interactive materials for the Pavement Construction course. His learning tools have also been used at Auburn University and University of California-Davis.

R1edu is a consortium of 34 American research universities that pool their resources and knowledge to provide access to distance learning classes and reference materials.

MEDAL METTLE: Thomas Bosworth, professor emeritus of architecture, has been honored with the AIA Seattle Medal 2003, the highest honor granted by the Seattle chapter of the American Institute of Architects for distinguished lifetime achievement. The organization cited Bosworth’s much-honored and widely published work in residential design, “which has become emblematic of the central values that inform Northwest architecture.”

CASE WINNERS: The UW won three awards in the annual competition sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. A gold award for special programs publication packages was given for a dinner series event packet designed by John Linse and Jo-Ann Sire. A silver award for magazine publication improvement went to the Business School for its magazine, edited by Julie Case, and the UW also received one of 24 Wealth ID Awards for educational fund raising.

VIDEO VICTORS: Three UWTV productions have won Telly Awards showcasing outstanding video, film and television productions. Winners of the awards are “Real Connections” produced by Charlie Hinckley; “Contextual Teaching & Learning: Schoolwide Enrichment Model” produced by Christopher Redner and “Science Forum: The Ends of the World: Astrobiology and Armageddon” produced by Al Ross.

KUDOS: Anil Coumar, director of the Mental Health Clinic at Hall Health Center, has been named this year’s distinguished alumnus of Antioch University Seattle. Coumar received his master’s degree in psychology from Antioch in 1994.
