Biomedical Research Integrity series begins July 22

The 2003 Biomedical Research Integrity Series, an annual summer offering that includes lectures and discussion groups, will begin on Tuesday, July 22. The three lectures in the series are free and open to all UW and UW-affiliated faculty, staff, and students. All lectures will be from noon to 1 p.m in Hogness Auditorium (room A420) at the Health Sciences Center.

Ninety-minute lunch-time discussion groups associated with each lecture will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning July 30 through mid-September. Pre-registration is required for all discussion groups. Trainees are not required to pre-register for lectures, though it would be appreciated.

The series, now administered by the Department of Medical History & Ethics Continuing Education Program, was developed several years ago by the UW School of Medicine in response to a directive by the National Institutes of Health. This directive requires that all postdoctoral researchers, fellows, and graduate students supported by NIH training grants be provided with training in the ethics of research. Additionally, the Medical School Executive Committee recommends that all trainees, regardless of funding source, participate in the BRI series during their training.

The first lecture will be Tuesday, July 22, with Dr. Laurie Zoloth, professor of medical ethics and humanities at Northwestern University, speaking on “Conflicts of Interest: Rules and Desire in Research.”

On Tuesday, Aug. 12, there will be a panel discussion on “Ethics of Using Animals in Scientific Research.”

The final presentation is on Tuesday, Sept. 16, with Dr. Alan Weiner, chair of the UW Department of Biochemistry, speaking on “The (Occasionally) Rocky Road to Publication.”
