Medal of Merit
Nobel Laureate Lee Hartwell, president and director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and UW professor of genome sciences, was one of four Washingtonians to receive the state’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Merit, this month. This was the first time in five years that the medals were awarded. The other three went to Tom Foley, former U.S. House of Representatives speaker, author Ernest Gann and veterans advocate Helmut Braunsteiner. Gann and Braunsteiner received the award posthumously.
