CFD: Sense of accomplishment drives ‘Guts’ volunteer

Editor’s Note: Throughout the Combined Fund Drive campaign, which runs through Nov. 21, University Week will feature University employees who volunteer at CFD agencies.

Name: Andrea Nalani LaFazia

UW Job: Research Coordinator, Social Development Research Group, School of Social Work

Volunteer Activity: I am a member on the “You Gotta have Guts” 5K run/walk race committee for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (Northwest Chapter).

Organization’s mission: To cure and prevent Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis through research, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these digestive diseases through education and support. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic digestive diseases of the intestines. These illnesses are collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Anyone can get IBD, although adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 35 are most susceptible. The causes of IBD are unknown and there is no medical cure.

How long a volunteer: I have been a volunteer for three years. The first two years I participated in the annual 5K race and raised funds for the organization. Most recently I also served on the race committee, where I helped plan the 5K race, assisted with securing large sponsorships, and helped increase awareness and participation in the event.

Why this activity? I choose to volunteer with CCFA because I have Crohn’s disease. I was diagnosed in my early 20s and support the need for more research in the area of IBD.

Satisfaction in volunteering? The satisfaction for me in volunteering is the sense of accomplishment for doing something worthwhile and the commitment and camaraderie that is shared among all volunteers. The day of the race is the best. Individuals from all over the region come together for a common purpose; they are all interested in helping to find a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. And to know that I had a small part in bringing everyone together for the race and assisted in surpassing our fund-raising goals is very satisfying.
