Presentation at HMC on who owns what in lab

“Things Your Mother Never Taught You,” the popular series sponsored by the School of Medicine’s Office of Industry Relations, has scheduled a presentation at Harborview Medical Center next week.

“Who Owns What in the Lab?” is the topic from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, May 28, in the auditorium of the Research & Training Building. The presentation is free and open to everyone.

Dr. Susan Wray, director of industry relations, will be joined by Dr. Paula Szoka, director of invention licensing for the UW Technology Transfer Office; Dr. Charles Williams, director of digital ventures for UW Tech Transfer; and Clark Shores, assistant attorney general at the UW.

The presentation will address questions such as who controls the use and distribution of data, biological materials and copyrightable works in a lab, and what should happen to data, software, cell lines, mouse lines and lab notebooks when a faculty member leaves the lab.

The UW’s new Intellectual Property Policy will also be described and discussed.
