Heritage to get new home, new name

A new home is coming for the community outreach programs the UW shares with Heritage College, in Toppenish, Wash.

Ground will be broken Aug. 19 for the new Heritage University-University of Washington Community Partnerships Building in Toppenish. And that name is not a typo — the small school will officially change its title from Heritage College to Heritage University on Aug. 20.

The approximately 3,000-square-foot building, paid for by a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Hispanic-Serving Institutions, is expected to be completed in December, said Robert Ozuna, director of the community partnership program. “Heritage has been a growing, evolving institution, they’ve been outgrowing their space,” said Ozuna, who also led the grant-writing for the project.

Ozuna said the building will provide a community business and training center and a place for local parents to learn more about educational opportunities for their children. The building also will be the site for upcoming small business seminars and will house offices for the UW-Yakima Valley Community Partnerships Office.
