New NIH sharing policies explained

The series on “Things Your Mother Never Taught You,” sponsored by the School of Medicine’s Office of Industry Relations and open to everyone, has scheduled a presentation on new National Institutes of Health policies that encourage sharing information and resources.

“The New NIH Sandbox: Sharing Data, Model Organisms and Research Tools” will have a panel of four UW experts speaking on the NIH policies and the UW offices that can help researchers. The program is from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27, in room T-739 of the Health Sciences Building.

Topics include NIH rules on sharing raw data and submitted manuscripts, how the UW Office of Invention Licensing can help distribute animal models, how the UW Office of Digital Ventures can help create a laboratory plan for distribution and retention of data, and why the new policies are important to NIH and supported researchers.

Speakers are Dr. Susan Wray, director of industry relations for the School of Medicine; Dr. Charles Williams, director of digital ventures for UW Tech Transfer; Dr. Paula Szoka, director of invention licensing for Tech Transfer; and Suzanne Page, director of industry agreements for the Office of Grants and Contracts.
