Human Subjects Division on the move
The Human Subjects Division is either moving to a new place or coming home to an old one, depending on how you look at it.
The office will move from its current scattered locations, at 3945 15th Ave. NE, Gerberding Hall and the King Building on 25th Ave. to 3935 University Way, where the Office of Sponsored Programs (formerly called the Grant and Contract Services Office) used to be. The Office of Sponsored Programs, in turn, has moved to the University Plaza building at 1100 NE 45th St.
The Human Subjects office will move over the weekend and partly though Monday, Dec, 6, said Helen McGough, director of the Human Subjects Review Division. That means the office will be closed on Friday, Dec. 3, and will offer only limited service on Monday.
McGough said the move will be a positive change for the research community on campus, providing larger and better work and meeting spaces for Human Subjects Committee work and for researchers to meet with office staff.
“It’s actually coming home,” she said. “We used to be in the basement there, but now we’ll have both floors.”
Human Subjects has 23 staff members, she said, and a huge inventory of files. “That’s the biggest part — thousands and thousands of files. About 5,000 projects come through the office each year, and each one has a file that has to be moved.”
The Human Subjects Division works with all research that involves people, ensuring that volunteers feel physically safe and that confidential information about them will be protected, McGough said.
