A&S HONORS: Internationally recognized local author, David Guterson (Snow Falling on Cedars), is among the recipients of this year’s Distinguished Alumnus Awards from the College of Arts & Sciences. Nobel Prize Laureate Linda B. Buck will share the spotlight, along with actor Richard Karn (Home Improvement, Family Feud) and distinguished geographer Brian J. L. Berry. The Distinguished Alumnus Award honors those alumni “who embody a commitment to lifetime learning and active citizenship that the college strives to provide as a foundation for its students.” Awards will be presented at the Celebration of Distinction dinner in May. Information and registration are available by contacting the celebration office at 206-616-4469, or online at http://www.artsci.washington.edu/COD2005/.

CLEAR THOSE SHELVES: If your bookshelves are looking a little cluttered, consider donating some of those excess books to the annual Book and Media Sale sponsored by the Association of Library and Information Science Students (ALISS). Books, tapes, CDs, DVDs and records are gratefully accepted until Feb. 10, and the sale itself is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17 in By George. Proceeds from the sale help pay for professional development events such as lectures, career fairs and networking events. The collection barrel is located in the lobby of Allen Library North.
