Faculty workshop
Presentation skills: Everyone knows what sitting through a bad lecture is like, but not everyone knows how to create a great presentation. A faculty development workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, April 26, will focus on preparing materials, using PowerPoint, and common pitfalls to avoid. Two presentations, a 10-minute talk and a longer overview, will be demonstrated. Dr. Jan Carline, professor of medical education; Dr. Richard Deyo, professor of medicine and health services, and Dr. Eric Stern, professor of radiology, will be the presenters. Teaching Scholars Program
Applications for the 2005-2006 Teaching Scholars Program are being accepted by the School of Medicine’s Department of Medical Education. The program is designed to prepare UW health professions faculty members for positions of academic leadership through professional and educational development. To apply, submit an application form, a CV, a goal statement and a letter of support from your department chair. The program begins in September. ERIC’s Summer Session
The annual Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Clinical Research Methods Summer Session, sponsored by the Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC), with headquarters at the Seattle VA, will take place June 20 to 24 on the UW campus. Study section
Dr. Jaisri Lingappa, assistant professor of pathobiology in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, has been appointed to the AIDS Molecular and Cellular Biology Study Section at the National Institutes of Health.



Board of directors
Dr. Andy Stergachis, professor of epidemiology and interim chair of the Department of Pathobiology in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Pharmacists Association Foundation. The mission of the Foundation, based in Washington, D.C., is to improve consumer health outcomes that can be affected by pharmacy.



Pharmacy research fund
School of Pharmacy faculty, alumni and students can now apply for funds from the Elmer Plein Endowed Research Fund. Awards from $500 to $5,000 are granted for specific research projects, publication expenses or meeting expenses. Proposals must be submitted by July 1. The fund honors Professor Plein, a School of Pharmacy faculty member from 1938 until his death in 1994. For more information, see the Web site at http://depts.washington.edu/pharma/PleinFund.htm



Honored for service
Dr. Tom Robertson, professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine, and Dr. Sean Sullivan, professor of pharmacy and health services, were honored for their service on the board of directors of the American Lung Association of Washington. Sullivan had been a member since 1999 and Robertson since 2000.



Honorary degree
Dr. Sue Hegyvary, professor and dean emeritus of nursing, will receive an honorary doctor of science degree from Emory University this spring. She earned her master’s degree there at Emory’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in 1966.
