Drill to test emergency response to be held at UW Aug. 3

Several local and regional agencies will be testing their ability to respond to an emergency involving mass casualties caused by a weapon of mass destruction in a drill to be held at the University of Washington Aug. 3.

News media who wish to observe the exercise should come to the intersection of Northeast Campus Parkway and Brooklyn Avenue Northeast between 9 and 11 a.m.

A total of 350 people are expected to participate in the exercise, including personnel from the Seattle Fire Department, Seattle Police Department, Bellevue Police Department, UW Police Department and UW Medical Center. This simulated emergency will include about 60 individuals who have volunteered to serve as patients who have injuries and who may need to be decontaminated.

The drill, which will occur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., will cause transportation to be disrupted in a section of campus. The area bounded by University Way Northeast, Roosevelt Way Northeast, Northeast Campus Parkway and Lincoln Way, will be used by police, fire and transport vehicles involved in the emergency exercise.

Several Metro transit routes will be rerouted to avoid the area of the drill.
