Daylong events slated


  • The 2005 AIDS & STD Research Symposium, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the auditorium of Harborview Medical Center’s Research and Training Building, will include presentations by recent grant recipients and fellows, a faculty panel, and a keynote talk by Dr. Anna Wald, associate professor of medicine, on “STDs and HIV: Cozy Bedfellows.” The event is free and open to everyone, but preregistration is required.   • “Transplantation and Aging” is planned from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, in Pelton Auditorium at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC). The program is organized by the Seattle Cancer & Aging Program, jointly sponsored by FHCRC and the UW Nathan Shock Center for Aging Research. Both the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute on Aging provide funding for the Cancer & Aging Program. Topics include questions about accelerated aging after stem-cell or bone-marrow transplants and the relationship of DNA repair to cancer.   • The UW Exploratory Center for Obesity Research has organized a daylong symposium on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Henry Art Gallery auditorium on campus. “Metabolic Imprinting: Effects of Maternal Environment on Subsequent ‘Diabesity’ Risk” will begin at 9 a.m. with remarks by co-organizers Dr. Adam Drewnowski, director of the Exploratory Center, and Dr. David Cummings, associate professor of medicine. Topics will range from scientific studies of particular genetic traits in populations to policy issues for public health programs. Dr. Maxine Hayes of the Washington State Department of Health will be among the afternoon speakers.
