Surgery Division starts ‘Operation Peanut Butter’

With a goal of collecting at least 4,500 pounds of peanut butter before Christmas, the General Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery has launched “Operation Peanut Butter.”

Rosemary Grant, research coordinator in the division, is organizing the effort. In the last big “Operation,” in 2003, the division set out to collect an amount equal to the combined weights of its 12 surgeons.

They surpassed that number and collected more than 4,000 pounds; all of it was donated to Northwest Harvest for food banks in the community. Peanut butter is one of the most nutritious and in-demand foods at the food banks.

This year they will be collecting donations of both peanut butter and cash or checks (which will buy more peanut butter) at UW Medical Center and Harborview.

Some of the surgeons have already pledged to buy amounts of peanut butter equal to their own weights.

To join the effort, bring new containers of peanut butter to BB-487 in the Health Sciences Building or 7EH-88 at Harborview Medical Center.

Cash donations will be accepted at both locations or checks can be sent through campus mail to Box 356410. If you have questions, contact Grant at 206-543-9332.
