Brazilian dance troupe Grupo Corpo returns to Meany
The Brazilian dance ensemble Grupo Corpo will return to Meany Theater next week, bringing its fusion of Western theatrical dance forms and Afro-Brazilian traditions. Performances are slated for 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 2–4.
There are two works on the program. The first, Lecuona, is a series of duets. Each duet has a personality, proposes its own relations, and practically tells its own story. Here, the dancers are not sexless bodies; they are men and women whose bodies seem to speak all forms of passion — of love or of eroticism. Their bodies entwine or reject one another, inexorably approaching a kiss that never happens.
The second work, Onqotô, is one of the 28 ballets created by Rodrigo Pederneiras for Grupo Corpo since 1978, it has the most floor work. The 12 dancers seem to be constantly swallowed by an invisible force of gravity; they are in tune with and sometimes in sharp opposition to the soundtrack.
Single tickets for Grupo Corpo are $42 and are available at the UW Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880 as well as online at www.uwworldseries.org.
