Nominations sought

Nominations are open for the Scribner Courage in Health Care Award, named after the pioneering UW faculty member Dr. Belding Scribner, who developed a way to perform long-term kidney dialysis in the 1960s.

The award will be presented in the fall of 2006 by the Washington Academy of Family Physicians and First Choice Health, with proceeds from the award event supporting Northwest Kidney Centers.

To learn more on the process, e-mail breynolds@fchn.com  or call 206-268-2430. The deadline for nominations is June 20.

Sellick off to San Diego

Kathleen Sellick, executive director of UW Medical Center since 2001, has accepted a position as president and chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital and Health Center in San Diego. She will leave the UW at the end of May.

Sellick came to Seattle in 1999 as chief operating officer for UWMC after she had held that position for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange County, Calif.

Dr. Paul Ramsey, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, has named Lisa Brandenburg, current chief operating officer of UWMC, to be interim executive director while a national search is conducted.

Supporting Native American education

Drs. Nelson Fausto, chair of the Department of Pathology, and Ann De Lancey, clinical associate professor of psychiatry, have donated $50,000 to create an Endowment for Native American Education.

Initially, the endowment will support the Native American Middle School Initiative, designed to recruit youths residing on Native American reservations into health-related careers.

The program is directed by Polly Olsen in the School of Medicine’s Native American Center of Excellence and Office of Multicultural Affairs. To learn more or to support the program, contact Olsen at polly@u.washington.edu.

Winning a Darling Medal

Health Sciences Library staffers Debra Revere, Sarah Safranek and Ann Madhavan were among those honored by a national award for their work on the Core Public Health Journals Project, which brings together researchers, practitioners and librarians across the country to identify the journals most important for libraries.

The award is the Louise Darling Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Collection Development in the Health Sciences, given by the Medical Library Association.
