Surgeon compares training to learning violin

Learning the Violin in Public: Does Traditional Surgical Training Meet the Needs of the Modern Specialist? is the topic for Dr. Martin Elliott, chair of cardiothoracic surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, when he speaks at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5, in room K-069 at the Health Sciences Center. He will also talk about the controversial question: When is a Cardiologist a Surgeon? The lecture is open to everyone.

Elliott is at the UW as the 15th annual visiting scholar for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. While here, he will also give teaching rounds with residents and attend research presentations with faculty and research fellows.

He was trained at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and has been a doing cardiac surgery in children for 25 years. He has been at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children since 1984 and was awarded the chair of cardiothoracic surgery at University College London in 2005.
