Honorary degree for Woods

Dr. Nancy Woods, dean of the UW School of Nursing, will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa in Israel May 21, recognizing her scientific contributions to women’s health research.

The citation notes that, in addition to her research, she has made a personal contribution to the academic development of nursing professionals from Israel by opening the doors of the UW School of Nursing to researchers from the University of Haifa Department of Nursing.


David Dale to lead ACP

Dr. David Dale, professor of medicine and former dean of the UW School of Medicine, has been selected as president-elect of the American College of Physicians and will become president of the organization for internal medicine physicians in April 2007.

The ACP is the largest medical specialty organization in the nation, with about 119,000 members. Dale has been a regent of ACP and editor-in-chief of the textbook ACP Medicine.


Joy Plein honored

Dr. Joy Plein, professor of pharmacy, has received the 2005 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the UW School of Pharmacy for excellence in her profession and exceptional contributions to geriatric and senior care pharmacy practice.

Plein, who is also co-coordinator for the UW-Hearthstone Pharmacy Education and Service Program, has been a member of the School of Pharmacy faculty for 32 years. She received the award at the annual Dean’s Recognition Event.


‘Talk to the Doctor’

A monthly series of presentations at Gilda’s Club Seattle, 1400 Broadway, gives participants a chance to ask questions and talk with a physician specializing in cancer care. UW Medicine and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance are co-sponsors.

On Wednesday, June 21, Dr. Heidi Gray, a gynecologic oncologist at SCCA, will answer questions about gynecologic cancers from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The talks are open to the public, but participants must register by calling 206-709-1400.


Haviland award given

Dr. Suhail Ahmad, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology, has received the 2006 James W. Haviland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Nephrology from the Northwest Kidney Centers Board of Directors. Ahmad was recognized for his outstanding expertise and contributions in patient care, education and research, as well as his personal qualities of leadership, wisdom, commitment and sincere care for patients with kidney disease. The award is named for a founder of the kidney centers.


Harborview benefit June 2
