Join Team SCCA

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is forming a large team to take part in the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Race for the Cure at Qwest Field on Saturday, June 17. UW Medicine employees and patients can join participants from the other SCCA organizations, the Hutchinson Center and Children’s Hospital. Inst. of Medicine event June 6

The Institute of Medicine, a part of the National Academies, will have a regional meeting at the UW next week, with a public presentation on human variation.

“Human Variation and its Implications for Medicine,” featuring Dr. Robert Waterston, Gates professor and chair of the UW Dept. of Genome Sciences; Dr. Deborah Nickerson, professor of genome sciences, and Dr. Joshua Akey, assistant professor of genome sciences, will be from 4–5:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 6, in T-435 HSC, with a reception to follow.


Helping Haitian health

An evening fundraiser, Caribbean Fantasy, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at Phinney Community Hall, will benefit Haitian Health Allies, organized by a group of Harborview Medical Center employees to improve the lives of children affected by HIV/AIDS in Southeast Haiti. Dugdale to head Hall Health

Dr. David Dugdale has been appointed director of the Hall Health Primary Care Center, effective Sept. 1.

Dugdale, associate medical director for ambulatory care at UW Medical Center, has been at the UW since 1982. He served as director of the General Internal Medicine Center for 13 years. His clinical research interests are patient-doctor communication, diabetes management and mental health management in primary-care settings. As of July, Dugdale will be promoted to professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine.


Nursing scholarships given

The King County Nurses Association has awarded scholarships of $1,500 to 10 area nursing students, including three at the UW School of Nursing and another who is a UW Medical Center employee.

The School of Nursing students are George Baxter, Anna McClendon and Viet Nguyen. Christy Scholtes, who attends Shoreline Community College, has worked as a stem cell technician at UWMC.


Skin cancer screening set

A free skin cancer screening will be offered on Friday, June 30, at UW Medical Center’s Dermatology Clinic.

Appointments are required and can be made by calling Cathi Carol at 206-598-2112.


Alzheimer’s Forum in Bremerton

The Alzheimer’s Disease Public Forum, an annual event, will travel to Bremerton this year for a free public program from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at the Olympic College Campus Theater.

Speakers include Dr. Rebecca Logsdon on New Approaches to Dementia Care: Lessons from Quality-of-Life Research and Dr. G. Stennis Watson on Sugar on the Brain: What Do Diabetes and Insulin Have To Do with Alzheimer’s Disease? The forum is sponsored by several UW units including the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the deTornyay Center for Healthy Aging, as well as community groups.
