MATERIAL MAN: UW Chemistry Professor Larry Dalton will receive the 2003 Award in the Chemistry of Materials from the American Chemical Society at the group’s annual meeting in New Orleans, March 25. Dalton is being honored for his work in the area of photonics and optical materials. The $5,000 award was established in 1988 by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the commercialization of nylon and the creation of Teflon. Winners are cited for outstanding contributions to the chemistry of materials, particularly materials with actual or potential technological importance.

GERONTOLOGY GIANT: Suzanne Sikma, assistant professor in the UW Bothell Nursing program, has been named a scholar in the Geriatric Research Scholars and Fellows Program of the John A. Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing. Sikma was selected for having conducted significant research in gerontologic nursing and for her strong leadership potential. She is one of 11 nurses who were selected for this program, now in its fifth year, which fosters new gerontological nursing researchers with the goal of improving the quality of health care for older adults. The focus of Sikma’s research is on consumer directed care in gerontological nursing education and caregiver-consumer relationships. She is particularly interested in developing and measuring consumer-centered care for elders, particularly those living in community settings.

GENETICS & THE LAW: Anna Mastroianni, professor of law, is one of three U.S. researchers to be named a Greenwall Faculty Scholar in Bioethics. For the next three years, the New York-based Greenwall Foundation will provide funds allowing Mastroianni to devote half of her time to her research on genetics and public health policy. Mastroianni, who joined the UW in 1998, holds appointments at the School of Law, the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and the School of Medicine. She also has practiced health law and served on a White House advisory committee on human radiation experiments.
