Winston Churchill’s grandson to speak

Winston S. Churchill, grandson of the former British prime minister, will deliver a speech entitled, Public Leadership in Times of Crisis, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 in 120 Kane. The speech is the sixth annual Churchill Centre Lecture sponsored by the the UW Alumni Association and the Evans School of Public Affairs.

Like his father and grandfather before him, Winston S. Churchill was for many years a journalist and war correspondent, reporting on conflicts around the world. He served 27 years in Parliament and was appointed spokesman on Defence by Margaret Thatcher. His most recent book is Never Give In! The Best of Winston Churchill’s Speeches (Hyperion, 2003).

There will be a pre-lecture reception at 5:30 p.m. in Kane Hall’s Walker-Ames Room. At the reception, attendees will have the opportunity to meet and have their pictures taken with Churchill, as well as mingle with Evans School faculty and members of the Churchill Centre. The reception will feature hearty hors d’oeuvres and beverages and attendees will get preferred seating at the lecture.

Cost of attendance at the pre-lecture reception is $65 for UWAA members, UW faculty, staff and students, Churchill Centre members and English Speaking Union members; and $75 for all others. The lecture is free.

The lecture is part of a series of Churchill Centre events. On Friday, Oct. 27, there will be a graduate student seminar entitled, “Winston Churchill, Africa, and the Legacy of Imperialism.” Also on that day, Seattle City Club will host a “Conversation with Winston Churchill.”

On Saturday, Oct. 28, there will be an undergraduate seminar on Winston Churchill as well as a Churchill workshop for high school teachers. Both will take place at the Seattle Public Library.
