HEC Board approves new Computer Engineering degree at UWT

The Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved the new Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering and Systems, offered by the Institute of Technology at the UW Tacoma.

Through this program, aspiring computer engineers will learn to design hardware and software in ways that help them work together effectively, and design computer systems that may be embedded into anything from robots to appliances to enhance their performance. Classes began this week, and applications for the future are now being accepted. To learn more about the program or to apply, contact the Institute at www.insttech.washington.edu or 253-692-5860.

Students in the program will learn fundamental aspects of both computer science and electrical engineering through such classes as programming, data structures, computer architecture, circuits and analog electronics.

The program is currently open only to transfer students who have studied calculus, physics and chemistry, preferably with an associate of science degree. Starting in fall 2007, the program will be open to freshmen.

The Institute of Technology was launched in 2001 to cultivate a highly educated and knowledgeable workforce to support the state’s high-tech sector and spur economic development in the South Sound region. With the addition of the Computer Engineering and Systems degree, the Institute becomes polytechnic, offering degrees in both hardware and software applications, as envisioned when it was established. The Institute also offers a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degree in Computing and Software Systems, focusing on the field of software development.
