World-renowned pianist Markus Groh to play Meany on Jan. 9

The UW President’s Piano Series continues on Tuesday, Jan. 9, with the renowned Markus Groh. One of the finest pianists in the world today, Groh is a spellbinding recitalist who reveals shapes, textures and colors in a way seldom heard in live performance. The concert is at 8 p.m. in Meany Hall.

A native of Germany, Groh was a student of Konrad Richter in Stuttgart and Hans Leygraf in Berlin and Salzburg. He took first prize at the 1990 Artur Schnabel Competition in Berlin and gained immediate world renown after winning the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Competition in Brussels in 1995, the first German to do so.

Groh is widely acclaimed for his interpretations of Liszt. Avie Records released his all-Liszt recording in April 2006, and it was named “Editor’s Choice” in July’s issue of Gramophone Magazine.

On the program for the Meany concert are Mozart’s Fantasy in D Minor, K. 397, Brahms’ Seven Fantasies, Op. 116 and Hungarian Dances, Nos. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Liszt’s Annees de Pelerinage, Book 2.

Tickets are $33 and may be purchased in person at the UW Arts Ticket Office, by phone at 206-543-4880, and online at www.uwworldseries.org.

Ticket-holders are invited to come early to learn more about Markus Groh and the program at a free, pre-show lecture. UW World Series pre-show lectures begin 45 minutes prior to curtain and take place in the Meany Hall west lobby.
