THE KEMPER 100 — Who doesn’t like a good reading list? William T. Kemper Fellows for Teaching Excellence, faculty members at the University of Missouri recognized for their teaching excellence, recently compiled a list of 100 influential books published since 1900. “The Kemper list balances literary heavyweights such as Virginia Woolf and pop culture mega-wizard Harry Potter and irreverent comedian David Sedaris,” reported the campus newspaper, Mizzou Weekly. You can see the list online at http://kemperawards.missouri.edu/fellows/2006/picks/.

SPRING RAISES — About 36,000 staff members at the University of California, Davis, who earn less than $40,000, received special raises this spring, according to the campus newspaper, Dateline. The raises, totaling about $7.8 million and in addition to raises scheduled under collective bargaining agreements, are meant to recognize the impact of California’s high cost of living on employees. The raises ranged from .05 percent to 2 percent, depending on the employees’ salary levels.

STEEL MEETING — They may no longer forge much steel in Pittsburgh, but the University of Pittsburgh seems the appropriate place for the Association for Iron and Steel Technology’s annual international conference on producing cost-effective, high-quality steel. The conference will be held there July 16–19, and about 150 metallurgists, engineers and academics from 18 countries will gather to share the latest methods of producing and building with microalloyed steel, a strong, low-cost alternative.
