UW Medicine/Seattle Public Library Medical Lecture Series begins Sept. 5


Susan McCurry, adjunct research professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and attending psychologist in UW Medicine’s Geriatric and Family Services Clinic, kicks off the UW Medicine/ Seattle Public Library Medical Lecture Series with Caring for the Caregiver, Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Microsoft Auditorium, Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Seattle. McCurry, author of When a Family Member has Dementia, will offer caregivers practical and flexible tools to become more resilient in the midst of changes and challenges associated with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Elmore to give Science in Medicine Lecture Sept. 19



Dr. Joann Elmore, professor of medicine, and section head of General Internal Medicine at Harborview Medical Center, will present the first 2007-08 Science in Medicine Lecture, Wednesday, Sept. 19 from noon to 1 p.m. in Hogness Auditorium, Health Sciences Center. The lecture, Trade-offs in Breast Cancer Screening: The Good, the Bad, and the Unexpected, will be simulcast at several locations. General Clinical Research Symposium Sept. 21


The UW General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) will host its third annual symposium, Obesity 2007: Pathophysiology and the Public Health Dimension, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, in K-069 Health Sciences Center. Speakers from the UW, Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, will discuss the biology of human obesity and diabetes, surgical and non-surgical treatment options, and environmental contributors to the obesity epidemic in children and adults.

Dr. Bonnie Ramsey, professor of pediatrics and director of the Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center’s Cystic Fibrosis Center, will be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the event. Young Investigator Awards also will be presented to two outstanding pediatric and adult clinical researchers.

Save Oct. 4: Murray to give Distinguished Faculty Lecture


Dr. Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and professor of global health, will present the Autumn Quarter 2007 Distinguished Faculty Lecture, Evaluating the Performance of National Medical Care and Public Health Systems, Thursday, Oct. 4, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hogness Auditorium, Health Sciences Center. A reception will follow.
