Former Guatamalan activist to speak at Kane Nov. 7

Marco Antonio (Maco) Garavito, formerly active in the Guatemalan resistance and current director of the Guatemalan Mental Health League, will give a talk titled The Dream of Peace in Guatemala at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in 210 Kane. The event is free.

Garavito’s lecture is the second annual Veterans of Intercommunal Violence lecture sponsored by the Clowes Center for Conflict and Dialogue Studies, which is part of the Comparative History of Ideas program at the UW. In the lecture series, former combatants discuss the factors that led them to choose violence as a means for change, and the challenges of working for peace once they have laid down their arms.

In his lecture, Garavito will discuss the Guatemalan resistance and address the questions of how one decides to take up arms in a political struggle and how one builds peace once the armed struggle has ended.

The Clowes Center was formed in 2004 to provide a forum where students, faculty and members of the local and international public can conduct research and develop projects and events that explore efforts to create and sustain dialogue across social, political and national boundaries.
