UW World Series brings Gamelan Çudamani to Meany

Gamelan Çudamani, a 28-member music and dance company from Bali, will kick off the UW World Music & Theater Series with performances at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, at Meany Hall.

Gamelan Çudamani transports the audience into the life, rituals, and celebrations of an Indonesian village. Employing a rare semarandana orchestra, these gamelan musicians use seven tones

instead of the traditional five to create rich and varied sounds and

rhythms. The performance incorporates colorful costumes (including a spectacular dragon), and is suitable for audiences of all ages. This style of gamelan orchestra is still quite rare in Bali, and Çudamani is on the forefront of this work.

The UW World Series will also welcome special guest Yudhistiranto Sungadi, consul-general of Indonesia, San Francisco, who is scheduled to make opening remarks prior to Friday’s performance.

Ticket holders are invited to come early to learn more about Çudamani and Indonesian culture at a free pre-show lecture. UW World Series pre-show lectures begin 45 minutes prior to curtain and take place in the Meany Hall west lobby.

Tickets cost $32, or $29 for subscribers, and $20 for students.

The World Music & Theatre Series features five ensembles from far reaches of the planet, each bringing its own art form to the Meany stage. Upcoming events include:

  • Simon Shaheen, of Palestine, Jan. 26, 2008.
