Integrity, diversity, excellence, collaboration, innovation and respect. These core values lie at the heart of the UW’s Leadership, Community and Values Initiative (LCVI).

They are also the main criteria for the David B. Thorud Leadership Awards, created in coordination with the LCVI. Nominations for this prestigious campus honor are open through Thursday, Feb. 14.

“The Thorud Awards are about excellence in leadership at all levels through the University,” Kornberg said. “This is a chance for faculty and staff to get special recognition for someone they know who leads by example, guided by the core values of the University. It’s truly a special honor.”

The award honors the long and varied service of Thorud, who came to the UW in 1981 as dean of the College of Forest Resources, but has served in several other leadership positions since, when a need arose. He’s been director of Government Relations, acting vice president of University Relations, special assistant to President Mark Emmert and acting provost —— twice. Thorud retired from Forest Resources in 2000.

The Thorud Award is given to one faculty member and one staff member. Starting this year, senior academic and administrative positions through the level of associate dean or vice chancellor are not eligible for nomination.

An individual may receive the Thorud Award only once. Each award recipient receives $2,500.

The award was created in tandem with the LCVI, with an endowment fund to which UW deans all contributed. The University matched the donations, to honor Thorud’s long record of leadership.

In 2007, the Thorud Awards went to Eve Riskin, professor of electrical engineering and associate dean of academic affairs; and Don Wulff, director of The Graduate School’s Center for Instructional Development and Research.

In 2006, Thorud Awards went to Mike Wallace, professor of atmospheric sciences; and John Coulter, associate vice president for medical affairs in Health Sciences Administration.

To nominate someone for this award, send a one-page letter to the Thorud Leadership Selection Committee, c/o Mindy Kornberg, vice president for Human Resources, at mindyk@u.washington.edu.
