Naturalist to speak March 7 at Suzzallo

UW Libraries and the UW Alumni Association present Lyanda Lynn Haupt at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 7, in 101 Suzzallo. The talk is part of the UW Libraries Blom Lecture Series

Lyanda Lynn Haupt has created and directed educational programs for Seattle Audubon, worked in raptor rehabilitation in Vermont, and as a seabird researcher for the Fish and Wildlife Service in the remote tropical Pacific. Her first book, Rare Encounters with Ordinary Birds (Sasquatch, 2001) explores the relationship between humans, birds and ecological understanding, and is a winner of the 2002 Washington State Book Award. Her writing has appeared in Image, Open Spaces, Wild Earth, Conservation Biology Journal, Birdwatcher’s Digest and the Prairie Naturalist. Her latest book is The Importance of Everything and Other Lessons from Darwin’s Lost Notebooks (Little, Brown & Co, 2006).

The Dan and Ellen Blom Endowed Library Fund supports speakers of cultural interest to the Libraries. Nicole Blom Heath created the endowment in honor of her parents, Dan and Ellen Blom, as a permanent reminder of their love of books, literature and learning.

The event is free and open to the public; however, reservations are requested. Visit www.uwalum.com, or call 206-543-0540. The talk will be followed by a question and answer period, reception and book-signing.
