Cuong Vu Trio presents master classes for music students

The Cuong Vu Trio will lead two masterclasses/clinics for UW School of Music students on Friday, Jan. 9. The trio — comprising faculty artist Cuong Vu on trumpet, Stomu Takeishi on bass and Ted Poor on drums — will perform several pieces, discuss their music making, and critique performances by UW student ensembles and solo performers. The clinics, at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. in Room 35, Music, are free and open to the public for observation.

Cuong Vu’s critically acclaimed trio has been referred to as “the jazz version of a rock music power trio” (Jazz Weekly.com, Dec. 2000). The trio crisscrosses styles and conventional languages in pursuit of a new musical language without boundaries. Their music has been described as a “beguiling tapestry of sound and motion” (Schwann), “hypnotic” (Jazz Times), “brooding and masterly… awesome and magnificent” (Jazz Review) and their CDs have been placed on critics choice lists for best recordings of their respective years.
