Puppets and prosthetics featured in Meet the Charities event Jan. 30

The Prosthetics Outreach Foundation will be featured in the January installment of Meet the Charities, monthly events presented by the UW Combined Fund Drive, Washington state’s workplace giving campaign.

The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in the Plaza Café C and D of UW Medical Center. It’s free and open to all.

The Seattle-based Prosthetics Outreach Foundation provides access to prosthetics, medical care and support for children and adults in developing countries who suffer from limb loss and deformities.

Also on hand will be Jennifer Carroll, program coordinator with the Department of Economics, who has created and will perform a puppet show called Mrs. Periwinkle and Possum, designed to help alleviate children’s fears and confusion about dental procedures. Carroll is planning a trip to Bangladesh in February to present multiple performances of the piece. She also will be collecting donations of puppet show supplies such as construction paper, glue sticks, popsicle sticks, as well as toothbrushes, for her upcoming trip. Learn more about Carroll’s performances at http://www.apogiatura.com/bangladesh.htm.

Meet the Charities is a series of monthly workshops for UW faculty and staff where organizations supported by the Combined Fund Drive share their work and show how giving and volunteering help their mission.
