TOPS IN TELLY: Three UWTV programs were recognized at the 30th Annual Telly Awards. The awards honor the very best local, regional and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web. The UW productions honored were:
- Ilkhom Theatre Company/Sharing a Vision: Tashkent to Seattle features the internationally celebrated Ilkhom Theatre Company. The program was produced by Charlie Hinckley and edited by Kathy Medak.
- New Heart, New Life follows a young man through his heart transplant and recovery and was also produced by Hinckley and edited by Medak.
- Informatics: Design, Build & Secure a Future in Technology showcases the Informatics Program at the UW Information School and was produced by Patrick Witt and edited by Medak.
PEERLESS PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION: Sandra Archibald, dean of the Evans School of Public Affairs, is being honored as Public Administration Educator of the Year by the Evergreen Chapter of the American Society of Public Administration. The award recognizes an individual or program that has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to public administration education, as measured, for example, by the success of his/her/its students in the public administration profession, research or other work that has had an influence on the practice of public administration, etc. Innovation and ethical practices must be reflected in the individual’s or organization’s work. The association is also honoring Hubert Locke, the John and Marguerite Corbally Professor of Public Service and Dean Emeritus of the Evans School, with its President’s Award, which recognizes an individual who has been actively engaged in the activities of ASPA and promoted its ideals and objectives.
EXCELLENCE IN ETHICS: Carol Leppa, a professor of nursing at UW Bothell, will receive the 2009 Ethics and Human Rights Award given by the Washington State Nurses Association. The award is given in recognition of excellence in supporting major ethical and human rights issues and recognizes Leppa’s distinguished service and valuable assistance to nurses and the nursing profession. Leppa has been active in the Washington State Nurses Association, serving for many years on the Legislative and Health Policy Council. She also served on the UW advisory board for the International Human Rights Education and Research Network.
TWICE HONORED: Charles Johnson, a UW professor of English, will be awarded an honorary doctorate at Washington and Lee University in June. Also, the National Book Awards selection committee recently announced that Johnson will chair the panel that selects this year’s award for fiction. Johnson’s novel, Middle Passage, won a National Book Award in 1990.
