Play ball! Husky Night with the Mariners is July 10

Junior’s back and Ichiro’s hitting — it’s a great time to head to Safeco Field for some major league baseball. Why not go on Friday, July 10, when you can also support student scholarships at the UW?

That’s the annual Husky Summer Celebration Night with the Mariners, sponsored by Human Resources and the UW Alumni Association. Tickets for the game are discounted from $20 to $17 for the UW community.

And not only that, but $6 of every ticket will go to student scholarships at the UW. According to the alumni association, about $13,000 was raised through Mariners tickets the past two years for the Husky Pride Fund, which helps cash-strapped students. This year, the alumni association is using the proceeds to support and expand its General Scholarship Fund.

But wait, as they say on TV — there’s more. Every ticket-buyer also will receive a Mariners-UW cap, and the first 20,000 fans will get a DVD of Mariners TV commercials.

The Mariners will meet the Texas Rangers for the 2009 Husky Night, and the ball game will start at 7:10 p.m.

You can get complete details and order tickets online at www.uwalum.com/mariners. Disability accommodations also are available to those who arrange 48 hours ahead of time.

And since baseball fans tend to love statistics, consider that the M’s are two for three as they head into the fourth Husky Night. The Oakland A’s prevailed 5-2 in the first game, on Aug. 5, 2006; the M’s beat the Blue Jays 5-3 on June 29, 2007; and the M’s walloped the Cleveland Indians 8-2 on July 18, 2008.

Attend on July 10 and maybe you’ll find the answer to longtime baseball questions such as: Why does everybody sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch when they are already there?
