Disaster tip of the month: What to have right at hand
Editor’s note: The Emergency Management Division of the Washington Military Department is offering a tip a month to help people get prepared for a disaster. University Week will carry these monthly tips.
July’s tip has to do with being able to respond immediately to an emergency, whether it’s day or night. To facilitate that, Emergency Management recommends that critical items be stored under the bed at all times. Here is their list of what should be there:
- Sturdy shoes to protect your feet from broken glass
- Work gloves, preferably leather, to protect your hands from broken glass
- Hard hat to protect you from falling objects
- Flashlights and light sticks for a nighttime emergency
- A sign that says “help” on one side and “OK” on the other to be posted on your home to indicate your status during an emergency
- A few bandaids to use to hang the OK/help sign
