Martin Jacques to present ‘The Chinese 21st Century?’ May 13
Martin Jacques, the author of When China Rules the World: The Rise of the Middle Kingdom and the End of the Western World, will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 13, in the Walker-Ames Room, Kane. His talk is titled The Chinese 21st Century?
An award-winning journalist, Jacques is a columnist for the Guardian and the New Statesman. He is a visiting senior fellow at the London School of Economics; IDEAS, a center for the study of international affairs, diplomacy and grand strategy; and a visiting research fellow at the LSE’s Asia Research Center. He has made many television programs for the BBC, including writing and presenting Italy on Trial (1993), The Incredible Shrinking Politicians (1993), a two-part series on The End of the Western World (1996) and Proud to be Chinese (1998).
According to even the most conservative estimates, Jacques says, China will overtake the United States as the world’s largest economy by 2027 and will climb to the position of world economic leader by 2050. But the full repercussions of China’s meteoric rise — for itself and the rest of the globe — have been surprisingly little explained or understood until now. In his far-reaching and original investigation, Jacques offers provocative answers to some of the most pressing questions about China’s growing place on the world stage.
