Master weaver to visit Burke Nov. 5-7

From Friday, Nov. 5 until Sunday, Nov. 7, renowned Haida master weaver Evelyn Vanderhoop will demonstrate the Naaxiin technique of weaving at the Burke Museum. Demonstrations are are from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Vanderhoop is just one of the weavers featured at the Burke during its current exhibit, Weaving Heritage.

Other weaving demonstrations are:


  • Sunday, Nov. 14, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Cyndi White, Issaquah, WA, will use a handmade floor loom to weave cotton in various patterns of twill.
  • Saturday, Nov. 27, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: John Beard, Tigard, Ore., will work on a Ravenstail dance apron hand-twined in wool.
  • Sunday, Nov. 28, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Marilyn Romatka, Bellevue, will demonstrate Inkle loom weaving using cotton warp.
  • Saturday, Dec. 4, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Kris Leet, Bremerton, will demonstrate tablet weaving on silk warp.
  • Saturday, Dec. 11, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Mary Doherty, Seattle, will use a small floor loom to make Repp weave placemats using cotton yarn.

Weaving Heritage features 130 of the most beautifully designed and culturally significant textile masterpieces from the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The museum’s international textile collection has been widely used for research in the past, but most of these works have never before been on public display.

Weaving Heritage will be at the Burke through Feb. 27, 2011.
