3-D printed boat to enter tomorrow’s Milk Carton Derby

WHAT: First boat made in 3-D printer to compete in Seattle’s annual Milk Carton Derby

WHO: Student members of UW Fabbers, the UW’s 3-D printing student club

WHEN: 9 a.m. – noon on Sat., July 14, 2012

Team will arrive by 8 a.m. to register for the 10:45 a.m. race

WHERE: Green Lake Small Craft Center, 5900 West Green Lake Way N, Seattle

DETAILS: The UW student 3-D printing club is entering what it believes is the world’s first 3-D printed boat in the annual Milk Carton Derby at Green Lake. The 7-foot boat was made from recycled, melted and extruded milk cartons that the students collected and then run through a large, custom-designed 3-D printer in the UW’s Mechanical Engineering Building.

Boat construction was completed Friday. Students will test the crafts seaworthiness Friday evening in Lake Washington.
