December deadlines approach for Awards of Excellence nominations
Nominations are due next month for 10 of the University of Washington Awards of Excellence categories. First to close are nominations for the annual Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award, due Dec. 3.
New this year is the Distinguished Teaching Award for Innovation, created by the Office of the Provost. It recognizes a faculty member who, individually or as part of a team, has developed an innovative project that advances student learning. Additionally, the recipient should promote leadership in undergraduate teaching and encourage the dissemination of best practices by sharing promising innovations with UW faculty.
The award is open to current instructors on all UW campuses except those who have received Distinguished Teaching awards.

Distinguished Teaching Award
Presented to faculty who show extensive knowledge and a mastery of their subject matter and the ability to inspire, guide and mentor students through independent and creative thinking.

Distinguished Teaching Award for Innovation
Awarded to a faculty member or team who has developed an innovative project that advances student learning and promotes leadership in teaching and the sharing of best practices with faculty in a broader university setting

Excellence in Teaching Award
Given to two graduate teaching assistants for their ability to engage students in a variety of classroom settings in addition to demonstrating their teaching ability and mastery of the subject matter.

S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award
Given to a faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in community-based instruction, including public service internships and community partnership projects.

Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award
Recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the education and guidance of graduate students.

Distinguished Staff Award
Given to individuals or teams who have made extraordinary contributions to their departments and the university. Any UW employee in a classified, non-classified or professional staff position who hold a 50 percent or greater regular appointment and has been employed at the university for a minimum of six months as of the nomination deadline is eligible.

David B. Thorud Leadership Award
Given to one faculty member and one staff member who have demonstrated exceptional abilities to lead, serve, inspire and collaborate with broad impact. The award is named in honor of David B. Thorud, who served the university in leadership positions for 25 years.

Distinguished Librarian Award
Recognizes excellence in librarianship, especially as it benefits the academic community through innovative approaches to practice, research, teaching and learning. Additional factors include creativity, leadership, service, scholarship and demonstration of UW values. Any librarian at the university is eligible.

Outstanding Public Service Award
Recognizes faculty or staff efforts to improve the quality of people’s lives locally, nationally or internationally. The selection committee considers the nature and extent of the public service activity, the amount of time and effort involved, and the lasting impact it has had.

Distinguished Contributions to Lifelong Learning Award
Honors faculty who have taught or designed courses, seminars or workshops aimed at working adults and other nontraditional students, and who have received excellent teaching evaluations for that work.

University Faculty Lecture
Honors current or emeriti faculty whose research, scholarship or art has been widely recognized by their peers and whose achievements have had a substantial impact on their profession, on the research or performance of others and perhaps on society as a whole. The honoree delivers a lecture that is open to the public.
Nomination details: The University Faculty Lecture is administered through the office of the Secretary of the Faculty. The deadline has not yet been established.
Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus Award
Recognizes an outstanding alumnus or alumna, distinguished for service and achievement over a period of years since graduation from the UW. This award is not based on the individual’s work for the preceding year, but rather on his or her lifetime record.

Distinguished Service Award
Recognizes either an individual or group, who are UW Alumni Association members or volunteers and have made a significant impact on the association. The award recognizes outstanding service or devotion to the UWAA or the UW.

Distinguished Alumni Veteran Award (2014)
Recognizes a living UW alumnus or alumna who is a veteran and made a positive impact on their local, national or international community or on the University of Washington and/or veteran’s communities. The 2013 nominee has already been selected, but the 2014 nominations are now open.
