News Digest: Justice Sotomayor visit, donate frequent flyer miles
Tickets available starting Tuesday for Justice Sonia Sotomayor visit
Tickets for University of Washington undergraduates are available at the HUB info desk beginning Feb. 25 for those interested in attending U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor talk March 10 about “My Beloved World,” her memoir chronicling her journey from a housing project in the Bronx to her service as a federal judge in New York and ultimately as a Supreme Court Justice. She will be interviewed by Provost Ana Mari Cauce about the formative experiences that shaped her into who she is today.
The event will be 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the HUB Ballroom, and tickets are required.
Remaining tickets will be available at the HUB info desk for UW graduate and professional students beginning Feb. 27. Then on March 4, any tickets still available will be offered to faculty and staff.
As a component to Justice Sotomayor’s visit to campus, several faculty members held seminars that examined “My Beloved World” in light of their perspectives as scholars. Students in these seminars received free copies of the memoir and have reserved seating for the March 10 event.
Justice Sotomayor will also visit Town Hall that evening for a public event.
Donate frequent flyer miles to UW Combined Fund Drive, Make-A-Wish
Have unused frequent flyer miles? During March, the UW Combined Fund Drive is teaming up with Make-A-Wish Washington for an air-miles drive Wishes in Flight. The program solicits unused frequent flyer miles with Make-A-Wish airline partners Alaska, Delta, United or US Airways.
UW Combined Fund Drive hopes to raise 1 million miles by the end of March.
The miles allow Make-A-Wish to grant wishes to kids like Samantha, from Kennewick, Wash., who spent a day as a nurse in UW Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit.
Miles are in high demand as most wishes involve travel, according to the Make-A-Wish website.
