Arts Roundup: Dance, lectures — and Music of Today

Welcome to a new quarter! The Henry Art Gallery kicks off this week with an Incite • Insight lecture featuring artist Suzanne Bocanegra.  The School of Music quickly follows up with a faculty recital by Jazz Studies Professor Marc Seales and a Music of Today performance in collaboration with the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS).

If you’re looking for a dance performance, the UW World Series hosts Mexico’s premier contemporary dance company, Delfos Danza Contemporanea.

Incite • Insight Lecture: Suzanne Bocanegra

New York-based artist Suzanne Bocanegra’s performance and installation work has been exhibited internationally. Part artist’s talk, part performance, part cultural history, part sound installation, Bocanegra shares her journey of how she became an artist, through the voice of Paul Lazar, an actor long associated with New York’s Wooster Group. Faculty Recital: Marc Seales

Seales, professor of jazz studies, is joined by bassist Jeff Johnson for a concert of original tunes and music from the jazz repertoire, including works by George Duke and Wayne Shorter. More info.

ArtBreak with Melia Watras and Friends
2:30 p.m., April 4 | Henry Art Gallery
UW School of Music viola professor and chair of strings Melia Watras is joined by students Luke Fitzpatrick (violin), Romaric Pokorny (viola), and Emmeran Pokorny (viola) explore the connections between music and the exhibit “Ann Hamilton: the common S E N S E.” More info.

Regarded as one of the most important figures of the style now known as “British Acousmatics,” Jonty Harrison  joins DXARTS for an artist signature concert. More info.

Mexico’s premier contemporary dance company is a unique collective of artists known for their introspective, near-mystical approach to dance making. The company’s creative vision is characterized by fluid physicality and poetic narratives within a diverse repertory.  Delfos makes its Seattle debut with ‘Cuando los Disfraces se Cuelgan’ (When the Disguises are Hung Up), integrating dance, video, computer animation and music to explore identity and the unveiling of our interior world. Factory Showroom “Fixing the Future – Technics and Time”
Through April 11 | Jacob Lawrence Gallery
Visit the Jake to see the fourth show in the gallery’s Factory Series. The series is organized to explore the question, “Is a school a factory?” This show extends beyond the previous three themes with works exploring temporality, methodology, capitalism and facticity. More info.
