Arts Roundup: birthdays, butoh – and 37,000 balloons

Arts Roundup is back! The leaves are turning yellow, the days are getting shorter and students are arriving on campus – it’s time to kick off a new season of arts events at the UW. This weekend marks the end of the popular Martin Creed exhibit at the Henry Art Gallery and with it, your last chance to immerse yourself in a room filled with 37,000 balloons. The 2015-2016 UW World Series kicks off on October 1 with Japanese dance ensemble Sankai Juku, and the Burke Museum throws a party in honor of Washington state’s 126th birthday.

Created by noted British artist Martin Creed, “Work No. 360: Half the Air in a Given Space” offers visitors the unique opportunity to navigate an artwork from within, as they walk through a monochromatic and formless sea of spheres – comprised of more than 37,000 balloons. More info.

Washington State’s Birthday Party
October 1 | Burke Museum
Celebrate Washington state’s 126th birthday at the Burke Museum – the official Washington state museum. Join in for cake, a state symbol challenge and Washington-themed crafts. Plus, learn the official Washington state dance with square dance lessons led by the Subversive Square Dancing Society from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Cake will be served at 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. More info.

Faculty Lecture: Tad Hirsch, Interaction Design

Tad Hirsch, assistant professor of interaction design, gives a presentation about his research and design practice. A reception in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery will follow the lecture. More info.

Declared “one of the most original and startling dance theater groups” by The New York Times, Japanese butoh ensemble Sankai Juku kicks off the UW World Series season with three performances in back-to-back nights. Weaving meticulous  movement with dramatic staging, Sankai Juku is known for creating deeply moving dance and theatrical experiences. These Meany Hall performances feature the North American premiere of their latest creation, “Umusuna: Memories Before History.” More info.
