Helen Garrett named new registrar for the University of Washington
Helen Garrett has been selected as the University of Washington’s new university registrar and chief officer for enrollment information services.
“Helen emerged as the top candidate from a very deep pool of applicants. Her substantial experience in enrollment management combined with her wealth of knowledge regarding data and student information services were exactly what the registrar search committee was looking for,” said Philip Reid, chair of the registrar search committee and professor of chemistry. “She has the right combination of technical and personal skills to lead the Office of the University Registrar.”
Garrett comes to the UW from Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., where she led as dean of enrollment management systems. Serving for over 15 years at Lane, Garrett’s progressive responsibilities spanned positions such as executive dean of student affairs, registrar, director of admissions, and bursar. Prior to Lane, Garrett worked as an admissions officer at both public and private universities, including University of Oregon, Whittier College and University of Southern California.
She attained a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in college and university administration from Michigan State University. She is currently completing her Ed.D. through Oregon State University.
Garrett’s position at the UW will encompass not only leading the Office of the University Registrar, but also working collaboratively with university faculty on academic policy; assisting in the strategic development, implementation and management of information systems to support enrollment management efforts and areas; and ensuring the management, maintenance and integrity of student academic records.
“Helen brings not only a depth and breadth of expertise in registrar and enrollment affairs, but also high energy and excellent people skills,” said Philip Ballinger, associate vice provost for enrollment. “The enrollment management areas of the University have gained an excellent new leader and colleague.”
Garrett will begin at the UW on Feb. 16.
A meet-and-greet reception for Garrett will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Feb. 19 in Schmitz Hall, Room 228.
