Week of festivities celebrating launch of University of Washington campaign
The impact of the University of Washington will be even more visible this week during the lead-up to a Friday night celebration marking the launch of the UW’s most ambitious philanthropic campaign.
“Together” will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, and feature a multimedia spectacular celebrating the impact of the UW and its alumni, faculty, students, staff and friends. Presenters include Gov. Jay Inslee, Microsoft President Brad Smith and UW President Ana Mari Cauce, with performances by Hey Marseilles, the Columbia Choirs of Metropolitan Seattle Children’s Choirs, conductor Marcin Paczkowski, the Husky Marching Band, UW Chorale and UW Dance.
The entire community is invited to this event. Registration is free at uw.edu/together, but seating is limited. Parking for the event in lots adjacent to the arena is also free.
“Together” will be preceded by “W Day,” an event marking the 155th birthday of the University with free food and musical performances in Crockett Plaza outside Alaska Airlines Arena.
As part of the week of festivities, Gov. Inslee has issued a proclamation declaring Oct. 21 “Together UW Day,” as has King County Executive Dow Constantine. The cities of Seattle and Spokane are anticipated to make similar proclamations Monday.
Businesses and organizations will also be showing their support for the University by flying UW flags and turning their buildings purple on or before Friday, including CenturyLink Field, the EMP Museum, the Museum of History and Industry and the Seattle Great Wheel. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola delivery drivers in the Puget Sound region will be wearing purple UW hats on their routes.
Husky alumni, supporters and fans across Washington and around the world are also getting into the spirit during the week, which is also the week prior to Homecoming Weekend, by using the hashtag #TogetherUW and showing their support for the UW on social media. Supporters can download avatars at bit.ly/uwpurplepride.
The University of Washington extends special thanks to our generous sponsors, whose underwriting support makes our campaign launch experiences on Oct. 21 and throughout the academic year possible: Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, The Seattle Times, AT&T, Banner Bank and BECU. Their support also is expanding opportunities for UW students to serve our community.
No taxpayer funds, tuition funds or general donation funds are being used for the campaign launch experiences.
