UW statement regarding purported Red Square event Monday
The following is a statement from Denzil Suite, vice president for student life at the University of Washington, regarding an event purported to be taking place Monday on Red Square:
The UW administration and UWPD are aware of Facebook posts promoting a purported “Wall Building Association” event this Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Red Square and are planning accordingly. This is not a University-sanctioned event. While the University of Washington supports the rights of free speech and peaceful assembly, both our Student Conduct Code and our General Conduct Code prohibit violence, destruction of property and disruption of university operations. Individuals who violate these codes are subject to disciplinary action, up to dismissal and banning from campus, and those who commit criminal acts are subject to arrest and prosecution. Given recent events and understandable tensions, we want to emphasize the importance of safety and our shared responsibility for our community. The UW has a long and demonstrated history of peaceful protest and free expression. Maintaining that commitment and the safety of everyone is of utmost importance.
