Arts Roundup: A Conversation with artist Shirin Neshat, Gospel Choir, Photomedia Exhibit Reception, and more

This week in the arts, six MFA candidates in dance invite you to see the premiere of their work, attend a conversation with contemporary Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat, listen to a 100-voice gospel choir, and more.

May 16 – 20 | Meany Studio Theater

Six MFA candidates in dance invite you to participate in the premiere of six conceptually and aesthetically diverse works. Drawing from jazz, performance art, improvisational practices and contemporary dance, these new works grapple with time, underwater ecosystems, identity, vulnerability and the body as a biographical canvas. Performed by University of Washington undergraduate dancers.

A Conversation with Shirin Neshat

3:00 p.m., May 20 | Henry Art Gallery Auditorium

Shirin Neshat will talk with Samad Alavi (NELC) and Sonal Khullar (Art History) about her recent film Looking for Oum Kulthum (2017). Born in 1957 in Qazin, Iran, Neshat is a contemporary Iranian visual artist who has done work in film, art, and photography. She left Iran before the 1979 Revolution and began studying at the University of California, Berkeley. Her films tend to be abstract and left to interpretation, revolving around themes of gender, identity, and society. Her artwork has been included at the Tate Gallery in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. She currently lives and works in New York.

Phyllis Byrdwell, director of the UW Gospel Choir, leads the 100-voice gospel choir in songs of praise, jubilation, and other expressions of the Gospel tradition.

Byrdwell is Minister of Music at Mount Zion Baptist Church of Seattle and also a music educator for Lakeside School. She has conducted several seminar workshops on Gospel music throughout Washington state and nationally, and served as a songleader for the Baptist World Alliance conference in Birmingham, England in 2005. She was inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association’s Hall of Fame in 2002 and serves on the Seattle Symphony Board of Directors.A School of Music alumna, she holds a bachelor’s degree in music and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education.

Max, a single lesbian, just gave birth. She’s unemployed, with a house that’s falling apart, an ex on the loose, and no clue how to nurse her newborn. Can Goldie, an Orthodox Jewish lactation consultant, guide Max into motherhood? Or will conflicting family values get the better of them both? Playwright and UW Drama Senior Artist-in-Residence Karen Hartman makes her UW Drama debut with this hilarious, surprising, and deeply human play.
The Palm Beach New Times says, “No synopsis could adequately preview playwright Karen Hartman’s wicked gift for language.”
