The University of Washington has been ranked No. 28 on the Times Higher Education world rankings for 2019, released Wednesday.

The UW also is fourth among U.S. public institutions — behind UCLA, UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan — a position it has held for the last three years.

“As a public university with global reach, we seek to be measured by the impact we have on the lives of our students and on communities across Washington and around the world,” UW President Ana Mari Cauce said. “We are honored to have that impact recognized by this ranking, which is a reflection of the teaching, learning and discovery taking place at the University of Washington.”

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The rankings use 13 performance indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons that they say are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment, primarily based on a reputation survey); research (including the number of papers published in academic journals); citations (research influence, including the number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally); international outlook (including the university’s ability to attract students and faculty from around the world); and industry income (knowledge transfer in terms of a university’s ability to help industry with innovations, inventions and consultancy).
