Faculty/staff honors: Guggenheim fellowship, Fulbright award, cybersecurity policy advocate
Recent honors and achievements for University of Washington faculty and staff include a Guggenheim fellowship in film history, a Fulbright fellowship for bioethics research in South Africa and membership in a new state cybersecurity team formed by the National Governors Association.
James Tweedie of cinema studies receives Guggenheim fellowship
James Tweedie
James Tweedie, UW professor of cinema and media studies, has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for 2021.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation on April 8 announced 2021 fellowships for 184 American and Canadian scientists and social science and humanities scholars as well as writers and artists, selected from about 3,000 applicants.
Tweedie teaches about classic and modern Hollywood, film history and criticism, great directors and more. He has been named an academy scholar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is the author of “The Age of New Waves: Art, Cinema and the Staging of Globalization” (2013) and “Moving Pictures, Still Lives: Film, New Media and the Late Twentieth Century” (2018). He is now writing a history of Hollywood art direction and production design.

Bioethicist Nancy Jecker receives Fulbright award for study in South Africa

The Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has given Nancy Jecker, professor of bioethics and humanities in the UW School of Medicine, a Fulbright award for the 2021-2022 school year.
Jecker will be hosted by the University of Johannesburg, where she will pursue a project titled “Building Capacity for Bioethics in South Africa: Partnering to Tackle 21st Century Problems.”
A professor of bioethics and humanities, Jecker also holds adjunct appointments in law, global health and philosophy. She is the author of the book “Ending Midlife Bias: New Values for Old Age,” published in 2020 by Oxford University Press.

Barbara Endicott-Popovsky named to new state cybersecurity policy team
Barbara Endicott-Popovsky
Barbara Endicott-Popovsky has been chosen to be among those representing Washington state in a new cybersecurity policy team sponsored by the National Governors Association.
Endicott-Popovsky is the executive director of the Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity and an affiliate professor of computing and software systems at UW Bothell. In March the National Governors Association named her and 14 others to the 2021 Policy Academy on Advancing Whole-of-State Cybersecurity. Participating states are Kansas, Missouri, Montana and Washington.
The academy will support participating states in developing and implementing plans focused on cybersecurity governance, workforce development, infrastructure security and local government partnerships. The academy’s work began in March and will conclude in January 2022.
